The Return of Prescriptives Virtual Matte

Like an irreplaceable long-lost love, I have held onto hope that my beloved Prescriptives Virtual Matte foundation would someday return to me. Today, at 10:21AM, it did. Who says some things are hopeless? :) Two bottles of Fresh Beige for me, please. Hopefully, this is a sign that the company has been listening to its loyal customers and will continue to give us a fresh stock of these every now and then. I love, love that I can glam up this foundation by topping it off with some MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Dark and NARS Orgasm blush. I've been stingy with my last bottle and haven't worn it to work in a long time, but it's definitely low-key enough on its own for a toned-down natural look as well (I dilute it with a bit more Evian Mineral Spray for daytime wear). As much as I really do love my NARS Sheer Matte, saving $10 and getting the original feels SO much better.

With the close of the longest and most trying summer of my life, things have started looking up again lately. This little gem only made it better. Happy Monday, everyone!

EDIT: I wore the foundation out today for a business meeting and fell in love all over again with the amazing way that it blends seamlessly into my skin (I apply with quick strokes of my MAC 131 brush). Topped it off with Everyday Minerals Start to Bronze Finishing Powder and a tiny bit of MAC Springsheen blush.

It's actually surprising how well the foundation works with my skin. The first photo above was taken during February, when I was much paler than I am today. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I don't have to switch shades for different seasons (Fresh Beige for all day, every day). I think the secret to making it work is proper application and blending! I buff all my finishing powders with my MAC 182 for a proper, clean finish. Does anyone else love this foundation as much as I do?

Road to Skin Recovery - Part II

During a recent bikram yoga class, I was looking in the mirror when it dawned on me just how dramatically my skin has improved since I first began attending the classes. My latest struggle with acne runs inversely parallel to my passion for bikram –  in fact, bikram was a concrete part of the skin recovery plan I made for myself back in December of last year. At that time, I saw a very different mirror image when I first started practicing  – my skin was raw and red from constant medication, there were large cystic mounds all over, it was uncomfortable to look at and even more painful to suffer through. Since then, I’ve established a lifestyle makeover with changes to my skincare routine, diet and exercise.  It's been 8+ months from my darkest days, and I'm happy to say I've emerged with clearer skin and a much healthier body. In this entry, I shared what skincare products I've been using, but never followed through with part 2 so here we go!

Diet / Water

These yellow cherries and peaches were SO delicious
Diet is the #1 factor toward my skin recovery; I really cannot emphasize how significant a role my diet played. After combing through extensive forum threads at acne.org, I learned that there are a few common ingredients that trigger acne – the biggest offenders being 1) dairy, 2) coffee and other caffeinated drinks, 3) meat, and 4) sugar. Well, no wonder. Last fall, I became obsessed with Laughing Cow cheese rounds (the ones in the cheery red wax packaging), and was eating 1-2 a day. They were so yummy and looked small and harmless in their cute red packaging, so I thought I could get away with it. But with all that curdling cheese in my system along with daily cups of coffee (and what’s coffee without milk/cream and sugar? Again, terrible for acne), it really shouldn’t have surprised me that my skin blew up the way it did (I'm talking 15+ active pustules at a time!). Other factors also contributed to my breakouts, but the cheese and coffee I’ve pinpointed as the major malefactors.

So I imposed a strict diet overhaul. For three months, I cut out all cheese, red meat, milk, sugar, coffee and soda products from my life. No ice cream, butter, yogurt, lattes, steak, etc. I also experimented with a vegetarian diet, nixing all meats and instead eating a ton of tofu, eggs and nuts for my protein intake. The most extreme period was when I further cut out fruits and wheat products (as part of the anti-candida diet), and instead snacked on green veggies, eggs, and rice alternatives like quinoa. It was a very boring and cold eating existence, especially during the cold winter months when all I wanted was some sodium-filled shrimp tempura udon. But I stuck to my guns and chose salad daily for lunch. With time, it became more habitual and natural to choose salad and I looked forward to lunch time. The key is to change up ingredients everyday and trick your stomach into thinking that it’s consuming different things. My favorite toss-ins are cucumber, tomato, beets, avocado, eggs, mandarin oranges, sunflower seeds, artichoke, and olives.

The most important lesson I learned during my diet phase was that the link between all the acne irritants is HORMONAL IMBALANCE. Dairy products are produced by cows, most of which are fed antibiotics and the milk goes through further chemical procedures to be pasteurized. Meats are processed similarly where animals are fed hormones and passes those along to the end consumer - you and me. It made sense that once I restored my body to its natural balance, my skin would clear up. Now that my skin is more under control, I've reintroduced meats and some dairy into my palate but I am still cautious.

Water was also a key component. The general rule of thumb that our moms tell us when we’re little – drink 8 glasses a day – holds true for acne sufferers, but to an even greater degree. A glass is typically 8-ounces, so using the Starbucks grande cup (which is 16-ounces) as my benchmark, I drank 4 grande cups worth of water on a daily basis. Before this resolution, I barely had 3 glasses of liquid a day, and most of it was coffee and soda! When I first started drinking more water, I thought I’d get water poisoning from so much liquids, but it got easier. Every morning at 9AM, I would start with a full cup of my caffeine-free Get Gorgeous tea, and refill throughout the day at 12PM, 4PM and 7PM. For dinner, I’d either fill up another cup or down a large water bottle along with my meal. It was actually pretty easy to get my daily water intake.

From Kimberly Snyder's health blog, I also learned of Kombucha, a tea drink fermented with bacteria and yeast which has great cleansing powers. The taste is overwhelmingly vinegary, but I've loved vinegar since I was little so had no problem downing this stuff. I would try to drink 3 bottles of kombucha a week, but these things are freakin' pricey at $5-6 a pop (I bought the GT Synergy brand.. but there are probably cheaper alternatives on the market). Kombucha is touted to have many healthful benefits - detoxing the body by eliminating wastes, aiding digestion, boosting the immune system, etc. It all comes back to ridding the body of the harmful chemicals it's ingested over time. Drinking this sloshes out all the bad bacteria and clears up your system. The one footnote I must mention though is that, due to the fermentation process (not unlike how people make beer!), there is a teeny tiny trace of alcohol in kombucha - which can lead to some redness if you lack a certain enzyme haha.

Supplements / Vitamin

To cover all my bases, I figured I should take supplements and vitamins in addition to my diet overhaul. I kept up my daily dose of probiotics, and added into the mix - fish oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil (the point of the trio was to load up on omega-3's), vitamin E, and a vitamin D / magnesium / calcium composite. I decided against a multivitamin since some of the included supplements (biotin, for example) can be aggravating to acne. I started out with high dosages of each and scaled back over a few months. It's hard to say what exactly was effective and what wasn't since I was working with so many variables at once, but I do think the omega-3's were helpful in plumping out my skin and making it less oily.

Exercise

Keeping active and fit goes hand in hand with diet when leading a healthy lifestyle. My activities of choice were bikram yoga, rock climbing and Bar Method (emphasis moreso on bikram). Sitting in a humid 100 degree room and feeling toxins ooze out through my pores felt FANTASTIC - I knew not only was I getting a great workout toning my muscles and increasing flexibility, but I was also expelling impurities from my skin. From January through March, I religiously went to yoga at least once a week and saw results in my energy level and also in the clearing of my skin. The best part was coming home after a sweat session, showering and staring at how much smaller my pores looked and how soft my skin became. After March, I wasn't as diligent about going weekly but I still try to make it to bikram whenever I can for a good cleanse.

Stress / Attitude

Probably the hardest aspect of having acne is the psychological tolls it takes. I've been there - completely depressed bout my appearance, refusing to go out and socialize, no treatment was working and I hit an all-time low. It was at this desperate point that I was willing to make drastic changes to my lifestyle, and hence, took on all of the above, in addition to an extremely strict skincare routine. I was still discouraged and not too hopeful, but at least I felt like I was taking control of the situation instead of letting acne dictate my life.

May 2010 - all clear!
Having a support group and the right mentality is equally as important as starting a new skincare routine or workout. For sure I still freaked out about my skin, but I was lucky to have friends accept me as I am and help me realize that the best way to cure my acne was to reduce my stress level and stay positive. A few reminders that really helped me during the most painful months:

1) be patient and give everything a fair chance - results will take time
2) be diligent and persistent when implementing something new - if I didn't keep up my skincare / diet / exercise religiously, I don't think I would've had as good results as I did
3) be courageous and dust off what others may think of your skin - truthfully, only you think your skin as worse than it really is. Try to go sans makeup some days, let your skin breathe
4) avoid stressful situations and try to maintain calm since we all know stress is a huge acne instigator. also, SLEEP MORE!

It's been 8 months since I was at my all-time low and I have come so far from there. I don't have any "before" pictures before I was grossed out by how my skin looked in pictures, but suffice to say that I am completely empathetic to severe acne sufferers. I am still dealing with hyper-inflammatory pigmentation (i.e. scars) and get a rare hormonal pimple, but nothing at all like it used to be. I visited my parents a month ago, and they chalked up my skin's improvements to being 24 and finally not a teenager anymore, but I know that there was no magic to it - it just took a diligent approach, combining some gentle skin products, a healthier diet, exercise, and a dedication to keeping my body more in balance.

Bag Lady

A floodgate has been opened - ever since I've started thinking about which Chanel to get a year ago, reading up on and learning more about purses in general has become a favorite pastime for me. Going on Purse Forum regularly is now a routine, and I've been dreaming about new handbags. It really all began 2 years ago with Hayden-Harnett and Rebecca Minkoff, two mid-level brands that opened my eyes to the world of pretty, well-designed purses that you're proud to carry on your arm. It's a slippery slope... from there, I began to appreciate handbags and am now planning and saving for the next. Perks of being a girl =)

I got my Reissue in June but have since been even more hooked on Chanel. All this talk about purses has created a multiplier effect on me and my roommates - funny that it's just like how reading fashion / beauty blogs increase my desire to go shopping - because the other day, my apartment had these goodies:

Oh I wish these were all mine.. I've always wanted a shot like this haha

They're friends now! L to R (all Medium/Large sizes): Black caviar GH, Tiff's black caviar SH,  my black reissue GH, Jess' ecru caviar SH, Black lambskin GH

Close-up of Jess' Fall 2010 Ecru with silver hardware

Lambskin + gold hardware is a match made in heaven

Since these were arguably the biggest purchases we've made in our lives so far, a lot of lengthy discussions and list-making of pros and cons went into the decision process. Whether choosing the leather material, hardware, leather color style, size, etc. - each facet can affect the feel of the purse. It was probably the most brain damage I've ever done to choose an accessory haha, and not just for my own bag! I also had a lot of fun talking through every detail for my roommates' bags. But it was all worth it in the end, because each of us ended up with something we loved!

Of the quintet, 3 are spoken for but the black caviar M/L and black lambskin M/L are for sale, so shoot me an email if you are interested.

With fall coming up, I've turned my attention toward getting a new bag for work / casual use since the Chanel flaps are strictly for going out. The contenders are:

1) YSL Muse
I'm a fan of this classic shape and it seems very roomy for work. What I don't like is the strap drop - it seems a little long.
This may be the large size, so I'll probably need a medium satchel to not overwhelm me

2) Chloe Paraty
For fall, Chloe has a beautiful gray leather option for the Paraty, but seeing this in pictures sways me towards "no". The shoulder strap really bugs me.

3) Mulberry Alexa
I like the structure and briefcase feel of this bag.

Any thoughts? I'm still thinking through it and who knows if it ends up being another option altogether, but in the meantime, it's definitely fun just dreaming =)

Keep Calm and Have a Cupcake

Hi everyone! Just wanted to check in as I know I've been quite absent lately. Unfortunately, I've been going through a very tough time personally as this summer has been full of unexpected challenges and events. In any case, am hoping things will settle down soon so I can get back to writing. I know I speak for Janice as well when I say that these past few months of connecting with everyone within the blogging community has been so exciting and we appreciate everyone's continued support. I'm so happy at how much we've been able to grow Coastalpolitan this year and hope to continue to do so! My recent inability to keep up with all your posts and comments leaves me sad, but I have my fingers crossed that things will work out. Hope everyone is having a great summer and hope to be back soon. :)

For now, am loving this notebook to keep me going!

Seeing with the Naked Eye

There's been a ton of buzz about the new Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palette, primarily from Temptalia's website and Twitter feed, where I keep reading location updates on where to find these babies. I guess they were so popular that people across the nation had to get real-time updates on which Sephoras still had them in stock! My curiosity piqued, I made my way to the Columbus Circle Sephora last weekend to check it out.

There were two available, and after I left, only one =) I've always viewed Urban Decay as a great eyeshadow company; its large color variety and pigment payoff have been repeatedly compared to that of MAC's. But having started with MAC eyeshadows (and as a loyal fan!), Ive never made the transition to UD ... until now. This palette is gorgeous - jam packed with versatile, neutral colors and amazing value. The shadows range from light nude/beige hues, to warm tans and browns, to darker plums, midnight blues, and blue-grays. I don't wear a lot of eyeshadow (this is my first purchase in years) but have used this palette every single day - both for work and going out. There are 2 matte shadows that I like for work-appropriate faces, and the shimmery metallics are great for flashier nights out. I love that the kit comes with the UDPP which I pat on prior to applying the eyeshadow and it really helps maintain color throughout the day.

Let's talk about value. You get 12 full-size eyeshadows, a double-ended eyeliner pencil (Zero which is black, and Whiskey, a warm plummy brown), and the famous UD Primer Potion, all for $44!! That's incredible. The full-size single shadows are $17 each, and so are these (all 5 oz.), so the palette is worth $204 for the eyeshadows alone. The eyeliner and UDPP are excellent bonuses. With this palette, I don't see myself needing another neutral eyeshadow for a very long time. I can mix and match colors to create looks for every occasion, and can see myself getting a lot of mileage from this.

I also appreciate the sleek packaging. It comes in a brown crushed velvet box with gold lettering, which feels toned down and more grown-up relative to the usual colorful, cartoonish graphics on UD products. Closeups of the colors below...

My roommate commented that she loves having the names right under the shadows haha. It's convenient! Naked and Buck are the most-used colors right now.. they're both mattes. The only color I don't love is Sidecar - it has larger chunks of glitter which can be too much.

Smog and Darkhorse are great for smoking out the lids
This end is my one-stop shop for smoky eyes
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. I haven't bought makeup in awhile (black eyeliner doesn't count), and think this was worth it to bring me back. Let me know if you've used this and what your thoughts are!

Zara Basic Blazer and Ruffled Skirt

I was recently down in Orange County for a business meeting and of course had to stop by the beautiful South Coast Plaza after work... Combating a bad case of the work-day blues (echoing Janice when I apologize for my lack of postings as well) with shopping was definitely a much needed remedy. Not exactly having the means for some actual designer shopping, I went straight to my beloved Zara in hopes of checking out the summer collection I recently wrote about. No such luck with finding any of those items I mentioned, but I finally found the perfect-fitting blazer I have been hoping for.

There's no denying how important it is to have a classic fitting blazer, but I wanted one that was still casual enough that it wouldn't completely remind me of a work blazer. The slouchy blazer look was something I always wanted to try, but most of the longer blazers just look overwhelming over my short torso. As such, they never seemed to hit my hips the right way. I love the Zara Basic blazer I found for its structured fit, cropped sleeves, buttons (sets of three line the arm cuffs as well), and striped lining. The XS fit my shoulders perfectly and the shoulder pads don't protrude one bit. It's also roomy enough to button up without the lapels bunching up. Love, love this blazer and am looking forward to throwing this over a dressy shirt paired with leggings in the fall... or wearing it with a cute pair of trouser shorts a la Urban Outfitters' lookbooks. Oh the possibilities!

For now, I decided to have some fun and style it with a tiered ruffle skirt. I bought the skirt from F21 months ago and love that it employs the use of mixing up the purple and black tiers. The addition of an exposed back zipper also won me over. Unfortunately, I have never really found the right way to wear it... until now! Ann Taylor's Spring 2010 ad campaign featured a model in a tiered skirt and blazer, and I've never been able to shake that image from my mind! Sleek and classy, I loved the look and have to give full credit to that campaign for my intensified longing for a blazer of my own. I was definitely excited about finally having the chance to imitate the Ann Taylor outfit! I finished off the look with another oldie, but goodie, my favorite pair of Steve Madden bow-tie peeptoe heels. These heels have gone everywhere with me because of their versatility and comfort. Despite being only 3 1/2 inches, I've always felt that they still somehow make my legs look longer and slimmer. I can't wait to actually go out and wear this outfit somewhere fun (and fine, I might even wear the blazer to work one day).

Surprisingly, the black version of my skirt is still available online, but here are some other ideas for fun skirts to wear with your blazers:

For those of you still on the hunt for a blazer, I would definitely recommend stopping by Zara as they actually have a pretty large variety of blazers out right now (and all for $99 or $79). The grey jersey blazer which Tiffany of I am Style-ish has is back on the salesfloor and definitely cute, cute in person! The store didn't have any XS in stock, but I think it still might be a little too baggy for the smaller girls out there. I was pretty torn between the two choices, but was so glad I settled on the fitted one. For under $100, the Zara blazer was a great find compared to the (almost identical) $985 Barney's version:

As an aside to this, while searching online for some blazer styling tips, I stumbled upon chictopia.com. Wow! I've definitely heard of the site before, but never knew what a great community it was. I love that I can search by brand, clothing, style, location, or occasion and tons and tons of user pictures are immediately available for my perusal. I envy all these amazingly stylish girls out there and will definitely be using this tool for future style ideas. Check it out if you haven't! Some of my favorite blazer pictures: MSignature, zanzapanconstance_victoria, and thischicksgotstyle. Let me know what your favorite blazer looks are. I want to get as much wear out of mine as possible!

P.S. I am obviously in desperate need of a real camera. Any suggestions for a good beginner-friendly DSLR?

Off the Cuff - AT Loft Bracelet

Sorry for the lack of postings from me - it's been a stressful, emotional week so I haven't had as much time as I'd like to blog. However, one thing that made me very happy was getting a package from ExtraPetite with my goodies from the Summer Work Outfit giveaway! I received a summer scarf and gold cuff bracelet from  Ann Taylor Loft, and wore the bracelet yesterday for a night out. The quality pleasantly surprised me - it was heavy, strong and felt well-made. It didn't open and close squeakily as I've experienced with other cuff bracelets, which is great because it stayed in place all night even through hours of dancing. I had a little bit of difficulty getting it on at first since the opening is small but it's one of the only wrist pieces that actually fits me (usually, I have to push up my bracelets to about halfway up my forearm).

I only snapped one quick picture in the cab, but thought it matched perfectly with the chain of my purse. Since the wrist bling is such a statement piece, I kept the rest of my jewelry simple with a small pendant necklace and hoop earrings.
